When the first quarter reports for mobile handsets came in this year, the numbers showed that Android had surpassed Apple's OSX as the no. 2 mobile operating system for smartphones (RIMM/Blackberry took the no. 1 spot). This was a pretty big deal for the 2-year-old Android, and we're sure it messed up Steve Jobs's day pretty good. When the smoke cleared, a lot of techies were still impressed, but the world took it with a grain of salt: there is really only one iPhone, but there are walls full of Android-powered devices.
Picking the iPhone you want is a price game, but when it comes to Android, the options are daunting. We took time to go through the racks and find the Top 15 Android Phones on the Market Right Now. Click on for our thoughts on the HTC Evo 4G, Google Nexus One, HTC Hero, HTC Droid Incredible, LG Ally, the prepay Motorola i1 and others.

Matt June 15th, 2010 at 01:36 PM
Actually.... It is based on OSX - a modified version, like AppleTV, tailored to the environment in question.

No Sony Xperia X10?
csilcock June 15th, 2010 at 12:59 PM
I agree, I have an Xperia X10, and it's a hell of a lot better than some of these phones...
Jody June 15th, 2010 at 04:49 PM
Agreed. 1Ghz Snapdragon processor, 8.1 megapixel camera with face tracking. Media and Timescape apps. I love my X10, I just wish it had root!

Now that Apple is using every trick in the book to defend its turf (including suing competitors and making it harder to create cross-platform mobile applications), the Android and Blackberry platforms are looking more and more attractive. Apple's $220 billion valuation could shrink if it continues to put short-term gain above developer- and user-friendly policies. Google seems to mean it when they say their motto is "don't be evil". What do you think Apple's motto is?

Lots of great Android phones are missing from list. Moreover some of them are really old and not the best devices. How about HTC Desire, HTC Legend, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, Samsung Galaxy S, etc.

This is BS. As an AT&T rep and a Nexus one owner I know for a fact the Motorolla Backflip is one of the worst android, no, it is THE worst android phone on the market. How could you strip a google phone of google services? That and lack of ability to turn any services off, ie. 3G to save battery. The Nexus boasts the fastest processor on the market the same screen resolution as any other top android phone out there and gets all of googles updates first even without rooting your device.

Well, giving praise to the Motorola Droid just ruined your entire credibility, as I own one and can vouch that it's execution is complete crap!
