Dhani Jones Tells Us the Best Clothing Brands for Athletic Builds

I am a John Varvatos type of guy. I really like the Varvatos’ slim straight Bowery jeans, because they have a little more room in the seat and they taper. It was hard to fit them before, because there wasn’t enough room. It would have a roomier thigh, but you wouldn’t be able to pull them up. Varvatos also has a lot of different ranges that you can layer—they give enough flexibility. 

I like this brand because it originated in the rugged dimension of Ralph Lauren. It is made for a farmer type, which is more of a muscular and athletic build. At the same time, with spending time out on the field, the quality of the material is made to last longer. Black Label is my favorite because the clothes fit perfectly and they work with you. They are tailored to a T. 

I play a lot of golf and I think their golf pants and attire are amazing. They're breathable and allow for flexibility. I think that one of the things that is important about Under Armour is that [founder] Kevin Plank played sports, so he understands the athletic build. When you have a founder who understands that, they work that into the clothing and that is a part of the overall design of their clothes. So, that makes it feasible for many different builds. Specifically when it comes to golf clothes, you might have these huge shirts because people have misconceptions about golfer bodies. 

The first time I ever tried on one of the brand's shirts, it fit perfectly. As an athlete, it's hard to find clothing that fits perfectly, but their XL fits the way a shirt should.

AG’s slim straight cut provides enough material. Since the fitness revolution has been taking place and more people are doing CrossFit and Spartan races, the fashion industry has started to complement and add different qualities to their clothing to make it more formable to the body, like adding a little more elasticity to traditional denim.

Outer Known is built for athletes—it is comfortable and sustainable. Kelly Slater believes in his brand the way one should. It is nice to see someone stand behind a brand like that.

Armani has some really nice evening coats that are cut pretty well. Fitting clothes is always the most difficult part, because the traditional drops and clothing sizes aren’t the same when you have an athletic frame, but now there is more of a natural taper to them.
