Spy Swag: How James Bond Has Influenced the World of Style

Let’s begin with the most obvious and iconic getup: the suit. Ever since Bond was introduced to the big screen over 50 years ago, every film has featured the tailored suit in a wide range of cuts, colors, and materials. But the current Bond has really taken the look to new heights—sporting slim-fit Tom Ford designs with next-level fabrics like mohair and cashmere. Yes, the suits have been revamped to reflect contemporary tastes, but they’ve all retained the classic Bond details, like the shawl collar and turn-back cuffs.

It’s no secret that the turtleneck sweater is making a huge comeback this season. But while many men are just beginning to incorporate this piece into their wardrobes, Bond has been wearing the roll-neck joint for the last several decades; however, in order to avoid an unflattering geriatric vibe, it’s consistently been presented in tailored fits and understated colors. Just look at the first movie poster for Spectre, which features a gun-wielding Craig in a dark gray turtleneck by N.Peal. 

An impressive timepiece has always been a must for 007. The watches he’s worn are sophisticated, masculine, and, most importantly, built to last. The Omega Seamaster is Bond’s current watch of choice. In the upcoming Spectre film, there are two distinct designs worn by Bond: You have the limited edition Seamaster 300 with a rugged, striped Nato strap, as well as the more refined Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M, inspired by the Bond family coat of arms. 

One of the biggest style cues men can take from Bond is to always remember the importance of practicality. Though he’s proven his ability to kick ass in formalwear, Bond is well aware that wearing a suit at all times isn’t very sensible. Certain missions call for clothes that are durable, protective, and easy to move in. Case in point, the variations of biker and flight jackets he’s worn over the years. 

Stylists have preserved this look in Spectre, as Bond will wear a sand-colored suede blouson by Matchless and a black racer jacket by John Varvatos.

Though we’ve seen him rock everything from low-top sneakers to Chukka boots and canvas espadrilles, the most iconic Bond shoe is, without a doubt, the cap-toe oxford. The design is sleek, versatile, and incredibly timeless. But the look of the shoes is only part of the appeal—Bond knows that durability and top-tier craftsmanship are the most important factors when it comes to proper shoes. 

This rule is really emphasized in the next film installment, in which 007 will wear the Norwich black calf oxfords made by British shoemaker Crockett & Jones. 

We can’t really talk about Bond’s wardrobe without mentioning the badass sunglasses he’s worn. Every Bond had a signature style as well as a favorite brand; but the sharpest, and most luxe, arsenal of eyewear definitely belongs to the current 007.

In Spectre, the secret agent will wear a pair of Snowdon FT0237 sunglasses—a wayfarer-inspired frame created by the American designer. This style is right in line with the Ford aviator model worn in Skyfall, both of which highlight the power of classic shades.

Bond’s style has become synonymous with refined suits, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he has an aversion to casual clothing. In fact, recent films have shown the secret agent in everything, from Levi’s twill trousers, to Ted Baker khakis, Sunspel polos, and T-shirts. Bond will continue to sport “off-duty” pieces in Spectre, as he will reportedly wear Rag & Bone selvedge denim and new versions of Sunspel’s Riveria polo. It’s just another reminder that a man can look just as good in a pair of jeans as he does in a Savile Row suit—as long as the quality and fit are on point.
