J.Crew may be struggling and reverting its approach to focus on the basics that sell so well, but that doesn't mean it was going to roll over and die, leaving us without some nice offerings for S/S 16. In fact, the collection pretty impressive. However, it tends to be a bit disheartening when a lot of the great J.Crew designs don't actually make it to the stores. But in the case of S/S 16, it feels like plenty of these are mainstream and conservative enough to work in most J.Crew stores while still remaining great wardrobe pieces. There's a fair share of indigo, lightweight work jackets a la Engineered Garments—even with the frog-fastening closure, a short-sleeve M-65 jacket for those spring days and a just plain solid coaches jacket. It's a fairly safe collection as one might expect, but those interesting, slightly off-beat touches elevate it just enough. Maybe this will help dig the brand out of the ditch it dug for itself. It's the right stuff to do it.
