Jean Touitou is known for his strong opinions and brash honesty, and a new interview with Brownbook features A.P.C’s founder and creative director in fine form. At one point during the interview, he states, “The fashion man is not sexy.”

“It’s a difficult thing to do fashion for men,” says Touitou, “while hating men who are too fashionable.” This is not the first time Touitou has expressed distaste for the stylish man, telling GQ back in October, “If you push too much on the fashion button, the guy will end up looking ridiculous. A guy that looks too fashionable is not sexy for even one quarter of a second. All girls will tell you this, and all gay men will tell you the same. It's very difficult to do men's fashion because you know aggressive fashion will be ridiculous.”

While the logical alternative to ostentatious fashion would be minimalism, Touitou doesn’t like this label either, despite the fact that A.P.C. is founded on a minimal and understated look. “It doesn’t pay to be a minimalist," Touitou tells Brownbook. "Your research on beauty doesn’t show too much. Only well-aware people can tell that you have achieved something great because it doesn’t’ look like it.”

And while he “hate(s) comparisons,” Touitou used a cooking metaphor to describe his plight: "Imagine that there’s just vegetables—no sauce, no meat. They have to be bloody perfect. That’s the extra challenge of minimalism. Sometimes people will tell you that’s it’s just boiled vegetables."
