Yohji Yamamoto is one of fashion’s most elusive figures, and this new short film proves that after 30 years in the business, one which is known for its grandiose nature, he hasn’t lost his appreciation for life’s most simple pleasures, like driving his car and spending time with his dog.

In a new short film called "Getting There", presented by NOWNESS and directed by Matthew Donaldson, we get the chance to share an intimate experience with the mystical designer: a drive around Tokyo in his 1980 Nissan Cedric. Yamamoto likens his car to a girlfriend, saying of his simply daily ritual, “it is a moment when I can become myself.” And in those moments of peaceful clarity is when Yamamoto finds himself to be most inspired, sharing that, “While I am driving the car, it’s a very important moment, to imagine about the next collection. New ideas for that come while I am driving a car.”

We also meet Yamamoto’s beloved Japanese Akita Rin, who he says is “always by (his) side.” Check out the film above.
