Designers Saif Bakir and Emma Hedlund go way back.

After meeting each other while studying fashion in London, the two went on to work together at various clothing companies like House of Holland, COS, Wooyoungmi, and then eventually as head designers at Kanye West’s Paris studio. But once West decided to relocate his headquarters to London, the two friends/coworkers decided it was time for them to return to Sweden and finally launch their own clothing line.

The brand, appropriately dubbed CMMN SWDN, taps into the no-fuss aesthetic that is so prevalent in Scandinavia: minimal unisex clothing that exudes “effortless cool.”

“Swedish culture and identity are usually described as simple, clean, and open to international influences,” Hedlund told Style.com. “We do foster our Swedish heritage, but it’s only one of several sources of inspiration for CMMN.”

This season, the design duo presented a hybrid genre they invented called “Tech Noir,” which draws inspiration from classic Hollywood as well as sartorial science fiction. Though the sources are very dissimilar, the end product is pretty on point. Traditional men’s shirts are revamped with water-resistant detailing; bomber jackets are presented in bold prints by Gerhard Mantz; outerwear is taken to the next level with a double-face wool/cashmere and hand finishing.

It’s an impressive collection of old-meets-new sensibilities, and we can’t wait to see what the brand has in store next.
