Yesterday, Supreme and Stone Island announced their new collaboration, set to drop early next month. Supreme has worked with quite a few artists and brands in the past, but this is the first time they've partnered with the outerwear and materials specialists at Stone Island.

i-D magazine sat down with Supreme's James Jebbia, who spoke openly about the collab. According to Jebbia, he and his team wanted to work with Stone Island because of the brand's history and innovative design techniques. "I know what Stone Island means to a lot of people in England and Europe," he told the publication. "We asked friends, who are real Stone Island fans who said, 'You gotta do this because it's really obscure,' but we don't really care about that, we just wanted to keep the essence of Stone Island and make something our customers would appreciate."

Supreme worked closely with Stone Island's owner and creative director, Carlos Rivetti, who, Jebbia says, "was great to work with." Jebbia points out that Rivetti was extremely hands-on, stopping by "just for the simplest thing." He also said that Stone Island is "very specific with their approach to treating fabric and dyes. They treat everything with passion, like they're just starting out."

The collection blends both Supreme and Stone Island's aesthetics, something Jebbia felt was important to carry out. Jebbia, who calls Ralph Lauren one of his biggest inspirations, likens Stone Island to Polo, or North Face, telling i-D that he looks at Stone Island as being "on the level" of the aforementioned brands. "What they do is the best," he says. "You take the football culture and that image out of it and the clothing is phenomenal. They're innovative and unique and we'll see how our customers see it with fresh eyes."

The Stone Island x Supreme collection drops at Supreme's stores (New York, Los Angeles, and London), select Stone Island shops, and both brands' websites on Oct. 2.
