When Nicki Minaj took the stage at the MTV VMAs last night to perform "Bang Bang" with Jessie J and Ariana Grande, she was literally holding herself together. The rapper strutted down the stage in a black mini dress which appeared to have come unzipped accidentally, right down the middle of her body—a wardrobe malfunction that threatened to break the Internet. Nicki even Instagrammed the zipper fail this morning, saying "God is good. As long as a nipple didn't come out to play, I'm fine."

According to TMZ, however, this malfunction wasn't really a malfunction after all, but a strategic and surefire publicity stunt.

Unnamed sources told TMZ that Minaj practiced shielding herself during rehearsals and walked onstage with the dress purposefully unzipped. The fashion "mishap" along with Minaj's jaw-dropping assets were sure to elicit a response, and if this whole thing was supposed to win the musician attention on Twitter, Instagram, Vine, etc., it certainly worked, and is merely the most recent sartorial stunt that is meant to stir up conversation and headlines.

You don't even have to look that far to find another example. Katy Perry and RiFF RAFF's homage to the Spears-Timberlake denim getup at last night's red carpet is just another example at the very same event of how celebrities are using fashion blunders to blow up social media and get their names popping without doing much at all. Red carpets and awards ceremonies have become magnets for live-tweeters around the world, and celebs are using the new all-access nature of these events to grab attention in even new and

It seems like Nicki's busted zipper may just be the latest incident in a rising trend of using wild-ass clothing to live out a modern twist on an old idiom: "no hashtag is a bad hashtag."
