Last night at the MTV VMAs, Katy Perry and Riff Raff closed out the red carpet in matching denim outfits that were an explicit nod to the denim get-ups that Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake rocked as a couple to the ceremonies in 2001. Of course, this being Katy Perry and Riff Raff, they put their own Versace spin on the homage with tons of studs, rips, and ice. So what did Britney think of the tribute? Apparently, she loved it, or at least wanted Twitter to know that.

While we enjoyed this zany end to the VMAs red carpet, let's remember that Katy Perry and Riff Raff's version was definitely a sartorial nod to a hilarious moment in pop culture and not a serious attempt at rocking out like Britney and JT, a moment that definitely has a cheesy charm to it (especially now that it's had over a decade to marinate). When paying homage to an OG with your own twist, there's always a chance the original purveyor could take it the wrong way or feel ridiculed. Luckily, it looks like Britney Spears has a sense of humor, which we should've known all along after she rocked a denim gown, for fuck's sake.
