Despite its themes of racism, sexism, and slavery, Kara Walker's A Subtlety installation at the Domino Sugar Refinery in Brooklyn has become something of a playground for people eager to take immature selfies with the giant nude sphinx, using hashtags like #sugarp**** and #sixfootvagina to amuse themselves and their followers while ignoring the point of the work.
If you want to join in on the "fun" but have no interest in waiting in line to see mounds of sugar, there is a new website called sugarselfie.us that uses your computer's webcam and a program similar to Apple's Photobooth to insert you into the factory where you can take a selfie at the front or back of the sphinx and share it with the world via the social media platform of your choice.
The website itself is a commentary on what Dazed calls a "remarkably tasteless trend," one that some have attributed to the growing selfie culture in general, while others blame the official #KaraWalkerDomino hashtag being promoted with the installation.
