German photographer Uwe Ommer has created “a family album for our planet.” Entitled 1,000 Families, this major photography project took four years to complete and features images of 1,000 different families from 130 countries. The photos are accompanied by familial anecdotes that capture the different social and cultural traditions that have helped shape each family unit.
With 1,000 photos representing hundreds of different ways of life, it seems inconceivable that there would be any similarities among the shots, but they are all linked by one thing: family affection. The artist underscores this universal by taking the photos the same way each time, in front of a white background using the same lighting techniques.
