When a hacker by the name of Guccifer found secret images of George W. Bush's covert artistic endeavours in the former president's email account last year, he unleashed them on the world. The paintings seemed like a present from the Internet gods. And then there were those nude bathroom portraits...
But a court in Romania doesn't see Guccifer's hacking in such a friendly light. Marcel Lazar Lehel, a cab driver who took the aliases "Guccifer" and "Small Fume," was arrested in January in Bucharest. A Romanian court has sentenced him to four years in prison for hacking emails of the head of the Romanian secret service and various people in entertainment, along with his infamous Bush hack. Because Lehel also carries a three-year suspended sentence, he could spend a total of seven years in jail.
Looking back, Bush should probably be thanking Guccifer. Dubya celebrated his first art opening this year at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, and he seems to take pride in his new activity. He even showed off his paintings to Hillary Clinton on his iPad.
Despite how he boosted Bush's artistic career, Reutersreports that the US has not mentioned Guccifer in court and that the country has not made an extradition request for the hacker.
