Location: Bridgehampton, N.Y.
Year: 1983

Maintained by the Dia Art Foundation, the Dan Flavin Art Institute in Bridgehampton is a former firehouse and church, which Flavin renovated from 1983 to 1988. Using factory-made fluorescent lights in standard lengths and colors, Flavin created neon structures and installations. Flavin's fluorescent lights inhabit spaces by illuminating them with eye-candy colors. The Dan Flavin Art Institute was opened to the public in 1983. It now contains nine of Flavin's iconic fluorescent light works, which date from 1963 to 1981.
