J.Crew takes the first steps in plotting out a new low-cost line of stores, tentatively known as J.Crew Mercantile. It is now impossible to find a reason not to shop at the on-trend staple retailer.

Inspired by CEO Mickey Drexler's time at Gap, the chain of stores would ultimately sit between the retailer's full line stores and the brand's J.Crew Factory outlet stores. Much like the way Old Navy compliments Gap, the J.Crew Mercantile stores would be in the same centers and markets that hold the J.Crew stores and offer what could be found in the mainline—just at a lower price point.

Aside from signing a few leases and filing to trademark the J.Crew Mercantile name in November, much about the new stores remains on the low. We'll be keeping our eyes peeled for updates on a retail move that is sure to be a savior to our wallets.
