Belgian artist Ben Heine is a man of many disciplines. In his ongoing series “Pencil vs. Camera,” he combines two of them: photography and sketching. The creative process entails adding a drawing to a previously taken photograph to alter it in a funny, emotional, or clever way. While many of the mash-ups are all in good fun, some carry important and unambiguous messages (he once dabbled in political cartoons). But whether it’s a heartfelt appeal for a less violent world or a monkey running through the subway, each edition helps the viewer see the world in a new and imaginative way.
