Montreal-based artist J. J. Levine, who is well known for his work in queer portraiture, has released a new series that plays with gender roles. The photographs in “Alone Time” appear to illustrate heterosexual couples’ adventures in mundane dating life (watching movies, cooking dinner), but, in reality, they depict something much more intriguing: both the male and the female in each picture are modeled by the same woman. It is the viewer’s knowledge of this fact that give the series its provocative spin.
"Alone Time" challenges people to think about the fluidity of gender, cultural expectations, and issues of identity. In these photos, Levine captures his subjects as living “beyond and outside the confines of the mainstream, capitalist gay world.”
