Japanese retailer Sun-Star has made pencil cases cool again. Their Fakus cases are designed to look like three-dimensional repositories when, in fact, they are completely flat. The name “Fakus” is a clever mash-up between the English word "fake" and a Japanese onomatopoeia for laughter, "kusu." By employing trompe l’oeil techniques and bold lines, these cases create the illusion of robust receptacles. While they may not take up as much space as your eyes would lead you to believe, they’re still useful. The Fakus cases can still hold up to a dozen pencils and pens at a time.
