Some people photograph landscapes, others photograph blood spatter and dead bodies. Ukrainian photographer Arthur Fellig will be remembered as the first person in the United States to work as a crime scene photographer. Fellig was nicknamed Weegee (like Ouija) because of his ability to reach a crime scene in New York City minutes after the crime had been committed.
According to Juxtapoz, Fellig was the only private citizen with a permit to own a police-band radio and he also built a darkroom in the back of his car so that the photos could be developed faster and given to the newspapers.
There is a special collection of Weegee's New York crime scene and street photography from the 1930s and '40s available online via the International Center of Photography's website.
