Metropolis II at theLos Angeles Museum of Artmakes Hot Wheels racing tracks look like amateur hour. Constructed by legendary performance artist Chris Burden, this high-powered kinetic installation features an impressive 18-track network, including a six-lane freeway. Cars zip along the interwoven roadways at speeds up to 240 miles per hour. As long as the piece is functioning, it supports the traffic equivalence of 100,000 toy cars every hour. The roads circle around skyscrapers and other structures, capturing the perfect likeness of a modern city.
“The noise, the continuous flow of the trains, and the speeding toy cars produce in the viewer the stress of living in a dynamic, active and bustling 21st century city,” Burden says of his piece.
