Chicago-based artist Roxy Paine’s first solo show, entitled “Apparatus,” was held at Kavi Gupta Gallery last year, but the show's installations have captured the Internet's attention for months after it closed. For the show, Paine created dioramas of well-known public spaces that require humans to bring them to life, such as a control room and a fast-food restaurant. But unlike the dioramas you probably made in middle school for book reports, these are life-sized and carved entirely from wood. Every element of the pieces is crafted in painstaking detail from birch and maple—fast food cup lids, tiny needles on various dials, fine mesh fry baskets. The rooms stand frozen in time, unable to function without their human masters.
