Tokyo-based artist Tomoo Gokita will open a solo exhibition of paintings at the Chelsea location of Mary Boone Gallery on January 11. Gotika's black-white-gray portraits depict "dated archetypes" borrowed from film noir and pulp fiction but with a surrealistic twist. The portraits are given names like Geisha Girl, A Female Spy, Showgirl, and Cocktail Pianist from Acapulco, and the faces and portions of the bodies are covered, or "deconstructed" in a manner "appropriate to their origin in memory, their resurrection in the past."
The exhibition will show through March 1. For more information, visit the Mary Boone Gallery exhibition site.
