A Satanic church pushing for equal recognition under First Amendment rights unveiled plans for a sculpture in monument to Satan. The statue would be constructed at the state capitol in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, next to a monument to the Ten Commandments.

The new state would be seven feet tall and feature Satan in perhaps one of the more sinister forms, that of Baphomet, a goat-headed, demon-winged, cloven-hoofed satyr. Two children stand by the side and gaze toward the creature with smiles on their faces.

The New York-based Satanic Temple, those responsible for pushing construction of the statue, applied to have the homage erected after the ACLU sued to have the Ten Commandments monument removed in 2012, on the basis it was discriminatory to other religions.

The sculpture “will also have a functional purpose as a chair where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation,” Satanic Temple spokesperson Lucien Greaves told the Associated Press.

Other religious groups have applied to erect statues, notably a Hindu group and the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster (?).
