For the past eight years, the Best Art Vinyl Award has been awarded to the band and designers whose studio albums featured stellar cover artwork of any medium. The short list of 50 vinyl records has been on display at Malmaison hotels in the UK since early November, and today White Lies has been announced as the winner for 2013 with the artwork for "BIG TV."

Michael Kagan is the artist responsible for the oil painting used for the cover. Entitled Pilot 2, the work which depicts the face of an astronaut, was not made expressly for the band: "From the beginning, the band was very sincere and I could tell immediately how connected they felt to the painting and how it was important for them to use it," says Kagan. The cover was chosen by public vote and managed to beat out works by Damien Hirst and musicians including Paul McCartney and Elton John.

Second place went to Paul Jackson and his design for "Repent Replenish Repeat" by Dan le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip, and third to Leif Podhajsky for the cover of "North Borders" by Bonobo. The winners and nominees will remain on view at the Malmaison hotels through the end of January.
