Superman, America’s most beloved superhero, turned 75 this year. Batman, the hero the world deserves, but not the one it needs right now, celebrated his 74th. But no picture would give away these startling facts, except maybe if they were drawn by Swedish artist Andreas Englund. Englund has worked painstakingly on a series of portraits depicting an elderly superhero who’s blue uniform is adorned with a sinister-looking skull. The hero still appears to be in pretty good shape despite his obvious worry lines and his slouched stature. Englund elected to render his hero using materials worthy of his noble character: oils and large canvases. The portraits depict the hero performing various tasks, some super, some not.
