Photographer Thomas Jackson swaps natural phenomena for commonplace objects in his series “Emergent Behavior.” For the project, Jackson photographs hovering swarms of household items—such as cups, Post-its, and plastic bags—in formations that were inspired by natural phenomena, such as swarms of locusts and schools of birds. The formations are meant to evoke awe and fear, which is juxtaposed against the uneasy realization that the objects comprising the formations are both unnatural and harmless. One of the aims of the project is to evoke the interplay between the natural and the manufactured, the real and the fake.
