The grandson of cubist master Pablo Picasso is holding an online charity drawing for one of the artist’s paintings, and raffle tickets are a scant $135. That’s right—for the cost of a new pair of sneakers, you may be holding a Picasso painting valued at more than $1 million.
Only 50,000 tickets will be sold for the drawing. On December 18, the 1914 painting L’Homme au Gibus(Man in the Opera Hat) will be handed over to one lucky gambler in Paris, “under the supervision of Sotheby’s and a Court Bailiff.”
Oliver Picasso, whose grandmother, Marie-Therese Walter, was Picasso’s mistress, planned the event around extending opportunities to the underprivileged, both in the art market and through charity. All proceeds—which will amount to about five times what the Picasso is actually worth—go to the International Association to Save Tyre, a UNESCO world heritage site in Lebanon devastated by war.
There are still around 10,000 tickets left up for grabs.
