Celebrities, collections, press people, students, and art fanatics have descended in Miami for Art Basel Miami Beach. The main fair is the focal point of the week, with endless rows of booths by the biggest names in the art world. Leading galleries like Gagosian Gallery, David Zwirner, and White Cube are buzzing with visitors. VIPs like P. Diddy were spotted browsing the fair, and on view are some of the most famous artists of our time.
The fair is filled by shiny sculptures by Jeff Koons and polka dot works by Yayoi Kusama. There's something about art fairs that invites reflective surfaces, and Doug Aitken's silver texts are just as popular as Jeppe Hein's abstract mirrors (both perfect for #artselfies). Fair favorites like Nir Hod, Kehinde Wiley, Richard Prince, Nick Cave, and Ed Ruscha are all represented strongly across different galleries, and every so often, there appears an original Andy Warhol, Kazimir Malevich, or other lesser-known work or sketch from modern art royalty.
Isa Genzken, who is currently having a retrospective at MoMA and was previously overlooked by her male contemporaries, is finally getting due credit. There are multiple compositions of everyday objects arranged in surreal forms by the artist on view at various booths.
Amid the usual spectacles, like Damien Hirst's huge arrangement of dead but very real insects at White Cube, are pockets of less famous artists and galleries. Ingleby Gallery has recreated the Antigua shack of recluse and artist Frank Walter, the delusional eccentric who painted and typed away 25,00 pages of history and philosophy over his lifetime.
From blue chip galleries to lesser-known artists, browse what the fair has to offer. Here's the highlights with our list of 50 Must-See Art Pieces at Art Basel Miami Beach 2013.
Art Basel Miami Beach runs until Sunday, Dec. 8.
