The artist Rob Pruitt has been posting Instagram photos that appear to be simple shots of random objects, on backgrounds of clouds, for awhile now. But, as it came to light in a new interview with Alexandre Stipanovich over on the Opening Ceremony blog, these are a part of his new project where he sells these trinkets on eBay, in the Rob Pruitt Holiday Market.
It’s an extension of a project he began in the late ‘90s at the behest of Gavin Brown, he explains. Brown had asked Pruitt to curate a group show, and instead of a traditional setting, he gave each artist a table to create a flea-market type environment. Each artist was allowed to do whatever he or she pleased with the space, so long as that meant constantly manning the table.
"I suppose that this eBay market is my foray into that kind of social space that makes sense for me," he told Stipanovich, "I have a very deep connection to the objects that I bring home. I buy them because I'm magnetized to them, but then at a certain point I've gotten what I need from them, and then I’m releasing them out into the world."
