For a new show at Mary Boone Gallery in New York, KAWS has installed two giant wooden sculptures in the Chelsea location. One of the sculptures, At This Time, shows a lone Companion—one of KAWS's signature characters—covering his eyes and leaning back in anguish. The other, Along the Way, is made of two bashful 18-foot Companion figures arm in arm.
These monumental works are accompanied by three new paintings from KAWS. The canvases fall under KAWS's usual style, mixing cartoonish graphics and solid fields of color in a blend between pop art and street art.
In an interview with ARTINFO, KAWS describes his artistic process, "To make the paintings, I make drawings and then redraw them on the computer, using Adobe Illustrator, in different layers. Then we print these out, project them, and make color charts. With Illustrator I can Frankenstein all these images together and experiment with many compositions."
The Mary Boone show is in collaboration with Galerie Perrotin's KAWS exhibition in New York that also opened this weekend. On Oct. 12, KAWS also opened a show at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. After he designed the stage and awards for the MTV VMAs this summer, these fall exhibitions are just further examples of the momentum behind the Brooklyn-based artist.
Mary Boone Gallery opened their KAWS show on Saturday night with a star-studded guest list that included Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys.
