At the Setouchi Triennale, residents of Japan’s Teshima Island were invited to play a game of basketball where there was only one rule: there are no rules. Setouchi Triennale is a Japanese art festival aimed at fostering an interest in the arts for the residents of the small islands in Japan’s Inland Sea. The innovative backboard, which is shaped like the island Teshima, was designed by Berlin and Barcelona-based studio Ilbot & Pons. It boasts six nets positioned at varying heights. By departing from the standard basketball hoop structure, the designers created a way for individuals to bend traditional basketball rules. Players are free to invent the rules of those games themselves. The whimsical backboard design encourages multiple players to shoot hoops together, fostering both creativity and companionship.
