We consider ourselves pretty open-minded when it comes to performance art, but there are some things we can't and will probably never understand. On "Police Day" in Russia, performance artist Pyotr Pavlensky decided to protest Russia's police state by stripping naked and hammering a nail through his scrotum to the road outside Lenin’s Mausoleum in Moscow's Red Square. According to Metro, Pavlensky posted online that the performance was "a metaphor for the apathy, political indifference, and fatalism of contemporary Russian society." We're not exactly sure how that metaphor works, but apparently it's not the first time that Pavlensky has caused himself bodily harm in the name of art. Police eventually blanketed him and "removed" him from the ground before taking him to get medical attention.
