Last night at Sotheby's Contemporary Art Evening Sale, an Andy Warhol painting sold for a double record-breaking price at $105 million. The 1963 silkscreen, Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster) was the most expensive Warhol painting ever sold and the highest-grossing sale in Sotheby's history.
Silver Car Crash is one of Warhol's "Disaster" paintings, where he pulled morbid images from newspapers and silkscreened them repeatedly across his canvases. This work has only been seen by the public once in the past 26 years.
Warhol's previous record for a sale of a painting was $71.7 million, set by Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I) in 2007.
This exciting sale comes on the heels of smashed records and skyrocketing prices at Christie's on Tuesday night. For the auction house's Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale Francis Bacon's triptych Three Studies of Lucian Freud became the most expensive painting ever sold and Jeff Koons set the world auction record for a living artist with Balloon Dog (Orange).
