The government shutdown is over (for now) after lasting 16 long workless days this month. While the financial impact for the entire country will take a while to calculate, the Smithsonian Institute knows exactly how much money they lost in sales: $2.8million dollars. With some 800,000 visitors turned away from the Smithsonian's many museums, the Institute had to sit back and watch as millions of dollars in ticket and souvenir sales passed by. Around 3,500 of the institute's employees who were furloughed will receive back pay, but the institute itself can't make up the money it lost. With issues of overcrowded storage spaces and lost artifacts already on their plate, this is not a problem the Smithsonian wants to have.
