Jean Paul Gaultier's work in fashion has transcended the limits of fashion, so much that people consider it art. As such, Gaultier was offered the opportunity to have a retrospective exhibition of his 37-year career, which he agreed to only on the terms that he could be a part of planning and designing it.

After a successful showing at the Arkiteckturmuseet in Stockholm, Sweden (where we saw it last summer), "The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk" opens at the Brooklyn Museum on October 25 and runs through February 23, 2014. It includes new material that wasn't shown in any of the previous museums (The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Dallas Museum of Art, De Young Museum, The Fundación Mapfre, Kunsthal Rotterdam, and Arkitekturmuseet) alongside iconic pieces like the conical bra and corsets worn by Madonna and costumes from the films of Pedro Almodóvar. The show also includes photographs by Richard Avedon, Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, Herb Ritts, and Mario Testino.
