Japanese artist Onishi Yasuaki has long used odd, generally brittle materials, such as hot glue and plastic sheeting, to create monumental installations. In his new work, titled Vertical Emptiness, he took a slightly different approach. He removed the leaves from tree branches, suspended them from the ceiling of the gallery, and then draped hot glue across the limbs. Next, he used crystalized urea compounds to finish the effect. The result is a massive, frozen-looking dreamscape, a kind of wintery mystery.
