Daniel Arsham and choreographer Jonah Bokaer have been collaborators for a number of years, having met in 2006 when Bokaer was a dancer with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Over the years they have performed a number of pieces at the Adrienne Arsht Center, including REPLICA in 2010, and both RECESS and Why Patterns in 2012. During this year's Art Basel Miami, the duo will return to the Arsht Center for the premiere of Occupant, a performance that invovles Arsham's chalk objects and choreography by Bokaer.
In an interview with Nowness, Arsham revealed that the chalk objects used in the performance will be casts of "technological objects." He explained that objects are "white ghosts of their former selves" and that in Occupant the dancers will interact with the pieces causing them to degrade and create a drawing on the black paper that covers the performance space. The pieces for this performance will most likely be small objects, much smaller than the keyboard cast that Arsham recently created in collaboration withPharrell.
