An invasion of concrete robots, emblazoned with pixelated hearts and outstretched arms, has swept the Toronto streets. They are called Lovebots, and as cold and inhuman as some robots can be, these are particularly suited for spreading amorous warmth.
The project, by artist and designer Matthew Del Degan, consists of more than a hundred of the small cast concrete statuettes, spread across Toronto. There’s even a handy map of all the Lovebots’ locations throughout the city.
Each one is dedicated to someone who has made a difference in the lives of those around them. For example, Lovebot #75 is dedicated to a 10-year-old boy named Blaede. This little philanthropist has apparently been giving his toys away for free for years. There's now a lovebot in his front yard, too.
This is how Del Degan describes the project:
Lovebot reiterates the fact that we have the privilege of being human, where we are not restricted to programming; many of us work like robots in this technologically driven concrete jungle. However, humans are not robots and they have the capacity to share love and kindness with one another.
