Sculptor Anish Kapoor and Japanese architect Arata Isozaki collaborated to design and build this jellybean-like structure known as Ark Nova. The design has changed significantly from the original sketches seen back in 2011, but the purpose is the same. The 500-seat inflatable performance hall is a temporary space that is relatively easy to install, named "new ark" in hopes that it "will become a symbol of recovery immediately after the great earthquake disaster...Ark Nova obviously can't carry people and animals to escape from disaster, but we conceived the ark to travel packed with music and various arts, from the perspective of long-term rebuilding of culture and spirit."
We're not sure what kind of plastic the exterior of the structure is made of but it is durable enough to withstand the elements but obviously light enough that it can inflated, deflated, and moved from place to place. The Ark Nova will host the upcoming Lucerne Festival in Matsushima, Japan.
