The New York performance art biennial Performa announced its artist commissions for Performa 13 this year. Ryan McNamara, Rashid Johnson, Pawel Althamer, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Rosa Barba, Alexandre Singh, Marianne Vitale, Subodh Gupta, Raqs Media Collective, Pawel Althamer, Nicholas Hlobo, Florian Hecker, and Tori Wrånes have each been chosen to create new works that will be performed across 40 venues during the month of November.
Director and founder of Performa, RoseLee Goldberg (who wrote a great article about Jay Z's connection to and performance with Marina Abramovic at Pace Gallery), called the lineup "thrilling" and said that it shows that "more and more visual artists consider performance an important medium for expressing their ideas, and that cultural institutions now appreciate performance for its communicability to a broad public and as essential to their programs."
Performa 13 begins November 1 and will inhabit several spaces around New York City until November 24. For more information, click through to http://performa-arts.org/.
