While museums usually house the works of well-established artists who have had prolific careers, sometimes they also give attention to young, budding artists. "P.S. Art" is an exhibition held every year at the Metropolitan Museum that highlights young artists from NYC's public schools. The showcase features pre-kindergarten through 12th grade students from every borough in New York.
Despite their young ages, the students present truly impressive works, as you can see above. The artworks rely on a variety of mediums, from paintings and prints to mixed-media works and collage. The show, which lasts until August 25th, is far beyond macaroni glued onto construction paper.
The works have also been screened at a professional level. In its 11th year, the exhibition saw 800 submissions that were viewed by a panel of representatives from the Department of Education and Studio in a School. The pool of entries was then reduced to 330 semifinalists, who were screened again by members of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The museum brought the number down to a final 78. We can only imagine how proud these students must feel as they see their works on the hallowed halls of the Met.
