We have heard of many art projects that involve audience participation. However, the exhibition entitled Do It hosted by Manchester Art Gallery is one of the most awesome we've heard about. Audiences literally participate and experience the phenomenon of creating art with some of the best artists in the game. Visitors may embarrass themselves in the process, but the show seems worth the risk.
Artists have left directions for anyone to follow. Some are simple, some are incredibly complex. Some are tedious enough to discourage people from wanting to take part in any creative process. But the artists are incredibly notable: Ai Weiwei gives detailed instructions for disabling an overhead CCTV surveillance camera with a spray paint can. Tracy Emin commands people to give notes to strangers that say: "You Don't Give Me The Love That I Need." Yoko Ono has visitors write down their wishes onto pieces of paper and attach them to a Wish Tree. Tino Sehgal will be coming soon.
The exhibit includes an ever-changing roster of people which span over several galleries. However it has been on the road for 10 years. It started from a conversation between French artists Christian Boltanski and Bertrand Lavier, as well as Swiss curator Hans Ulrich Obrist (go figure). It has appeared in more than 60 different forms: videos, exhibitions, archives, seminars, and other events.
