The "Moonman" statue for the MTV Video Music Awards has been the same Buzz Aldrin-inspired silhouette for nearly 30 years. The iconic flag-planting astronaut that has become synonymous with MTV and the award show has received a temporary redesign by New York-based artist KAWS as they prepare to broadcast live from Brooklyn's Barclays Center this summer.

The redesigned KAWS Moonman is made of chrome like the original and stands 13" tall. MTV president Stephen Friedman stated that the new figure was made special for the Brooklyn broadcast and there are no plans to permanently adopt the figure. According to the New York Times, KAWS will also design the stage for the 2013 VMAs which will include a 60-foot-tall inflatable KAWS Moonman, the tallest "Companion" ever.
