Hong Kong's Upcoming M+ Museum May Put the Met in NYC to Shame

It is also supposed to be more than twice the size of London's Tate Modern.

Hong Kong has always wanted to have a major museum for modern and contemporary art, and now it looks like that may be happening soon. Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuronand the London-Hong Kong firm TFP Farrells have been hired to create a $642-million building for the M+ Museum. They will have almost 100 acres worth of park in West Kowloon, located across Victoria Bay from the city's Central District.

The building is slated to be 646,000-square-feet and shaped like a T. M+ is scheduled to be completed in 2017 and is planned to become an important part of the city's burgeoning cultural district. It will house visual and performing arts organizations. If it goes as planned, it may become one of the elite art museums in the world. It will be like the Centre Pompidou in Paris or the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It is also supposed to be more than twice the size of London's Tate Modern.

The structure will have a sunken exhibition space perfect for large-scale installations, sculptures, or performance pieces. The museum will showcase the donated Sigg collection, which is one of the biggest and most comprehensive collections of contemporary Chinese art. The cultural center will also feature seminal works in design and architecture.
