Yesterday the High Line in New York revealed its latest billboard commission. Artist Raymond Pettibon converted his 2010 drawing “No Title (Safe he called…)” into a large-scale work that depicts Brooklyn Dodgers legend JackieRobinson scene on home plate. The sign contains his trademark thick lines and handwritten touches.
On the left of the work appears the quote “Where Brooklyn At?” This is a reference to Notorious B.I.G, which adds some NYC love. Below the scene appears the words "Moses: ‘Out!’" which is both a pun on the popular baseball phrase and a reference to Robert Moses, the well known New York City chief of parks, roads, and public housing. He was pretty much responsible for relocating the Dodgers from Brooklyn to Los Angeles.
Pettibon will be holding his next solo show at David Zwirner in the West 19th Street location in September. Art and hip hop should come together more often.
