This Staircase Installation Creates an Illusory Pyramid Leading Up to the Simon Bolivar Monument in Panama

The shape presents a relevant symbol of power.

A new art installation in Panama decorates a set of stairs leading up to the monument dedicated to Venezuelan politician and leader Simon Bolivar. By filling in the individual steps with wooden wedges painted white, Mimmo Rubino has created an optical illusion of a pyramid placed in front of the statue. The effects of anamorphosis allow for the installation to be viewed from a single, straight-on perspective that makes the sloping surface seem like a three-dimensional object. The project was officially presented as part of the Biennial Del Sur, but its technical features may cause it to easily be mistaken for vandalism.
