The T-shirt is thought to have been adopted from European soldiers and laborers, who wore them as undergarments. The earliest recorded graphic tee popped up in 1948, when presidential candidate Thomas E. Dewey had shirts emblazoned with "Dew It With Dewey," albeit he still lost to Truman. In the 1950s, the T-shirt as standalone garment became commonplace casual wear for men, thanks in part to guys like Marlon Brando and WWII veterans.
