Who Invented It: Brooks Brothers
Year Introduced: 1896

Designed with polo players in mind, the button-down collar shirt had its roots in the world of casual style. Men didn't want their collars flopping in their faces on horseback, so Brooks Brothers applied this easy fix. Since then, the button-down collar oxford has gone from the world of sportswear to classic menswear. There are still some purists who claim you can't wear it with a suit, though.
