Art Museum Day is this Saturday, meaning about 180 museums all around the U.S. will offer free admission or a reduced rate for entrance. Various institutions will also hold special events to celebrate the occasion, which also coincides with International Museum Day for countries outside America.
The annual celebration is organized by the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) and this year it highlights an inspiring expression: “museums (memory + creativity) = social change.”

The list surprisingly contains some big named institutions that will be offering free admission: the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Los Angeles’s Getty Museum and the Hammer Museum, Washington, D.C.’s Phillips Collection, Atlanta’s High Museum of Art, the Studio Museum and the Jewish Museum in New York, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Along with those institutions, LAMCA will be taking $5 off its admission, the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver will allow entrance for only a dollar, and the Art Institute of Chicago is giving certain kinds of postcards away to kids under 14. Even the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) will give half off admission to people who buy tickets online for the occasion.
