Serving in any war can be difficult to describe to loved ones. It is one of those experiences that are hard to visualize unless you have served yourself. Well, an artist decided to capture his time serving in a way more people could relate to.
Illustrator Weston Emmart served in World War II and had many experience during his time. He documented his stint with cartoonish drawings, depicting bomb explosions and even death. The drawings were posted online by his grandson Alex in honor of Memorial Day. There's something dark yet hopeful about the medium of comics when applied to war imagery, as you can see above.
Alex told Huffington Postthat after serving, his grandfather continued artistic endeavors in advertising and creating watercolor works as well. His grandfather passed away a few days ago at 90.
